Important word in my vocabulary: Participation
Reason behind it's importance? I'm terrified of it! Funny as it may sound, it's the truth. Sunday, though, I participated in my first fun day with the rest of my teammates. It was a blast! We played a couple games and it didn't kill me. You can imagine my surprise. I even did pretty well. (:
The rest of the week was almost as successful. Monday we worked a lot on our falls and stops and I stayed with it throughout it all. Both my falls and stops are far from perfect, but I keep telling myself that with enough time and practice they'll get better. As funny as it sounds I'm enjoying learning to fall. Human nature tells us to be afraid of it, so it's awesome to be learning to accept it.
Wednesday we started real derby stuff like our first whip and skating in a close pack. How cool is that? It's very cool! I don't think I did too poorly with the whip, but my poor partner had to deal with my constant need for a break. I genuinely feel bad for anyone who gets stuck with me as a partner. Skating as a pack was neat. If only I could've kept with it longer. About halfway through the drill I got frustrated and gave up. I was struggling to keep up with everyone else and I guess it was my mood that night that allowed me to give up at that point and hide.
Honesty is the best policy, and I certainly plan on sharing the not so good parts of my learning process as well as the great. Like other skills, I'm sure I'll eventually improve. It's all just a matter of time. <3
